How do I start the process of looking for work as a GP in Australia?

Although there is a shortage of GPs in Australia and the lifestyle on offer is certainly enviable enough to attract huge numbers of people looking to emigrate, there are strict requirements in place for any overseas-trained GPs looking to apply for a job and make the move.

The first thing to consider is whether you have a qualification recognised by the Royal College of Australia General Practitioners (RACGP). Holding one of these (listed below) will ensure you pass through the registration process and gain your licence to work as a GP in Australia without issue. In 2019, the Australian government cut the number of overseas doctors allowed to enter the country to practice in Primary Care to approximately 200 per year, making the process very competitive.

Registration process

The process to register as a GP is now significantly quicker than previously and can be completed in anywhere up to 6 months.  We are here every step of the way to guide you through the process. As well as holding a qualification recognised by the RACGP, you will also be subject to other checks and assessments. For example, you will be asked to provide references, complete a medical and undergo a criminal record check, amongst other things.

Qualification requirements by country of residence

If you have one of the below qualifications as a GP in your country of residence, then you will be eligible to apply for a job as a GP in Australia. If you do not have one of these, or if you have a GP qualification from a country not on the list below, you WILL NOT be eligible to work as an unrestricted GP in Australia. Other pathways into Australia are available but without one of the following qualifications, we would unfortunately be unable to assist with your move.

In what locations could I work as a GP in Australia?

Australia is an amazingly diverse country and is home to some outstanding natural beauty. There is availability in both urban and rural settings, meaning there is usually something for everyone. Whilst it is increasingly difficult to gain a position in one of the major cities, there are plenty of alternatives with similar amenities that can accommodate GPs relocating into Australia. In some circumstances, there may also be availability in certain suburban regions of the bigger cities.
