Educational options for your family in Australia

There are very few restrictions on where your child may attend school in Australia. The good news is that all schools in the country are of an internationally acclaimed standard. Below is a short summary of options available to you as an expat.

Local schools

Public (local) schools are run by their respective states, though this will change in the next few years as a national curriculum is gradually being introduced.

Regardless of the state you live in, if you’re not on a permanent visa you will have to pay a fixed tuition fee for the school. This can be as much as £450 per term, though in reality it averages at closer to £70. Even if you have a permanent visa, you – along with the Australian nationals – will still be expected to make a “voluntary contribution” each year. This tends to be about £30 per term, but can be as much as £150. It is also worth mentioning that uniforms and stationery are not included in these prices, so the cost of these would have to be met by you separately.

These schools almost never require an entrance exam, but admission to a school is determined by catchment area. So if there is a particular school that appeals to you, it may be worth looking for accommodation in that vicinity before applying.

Faith-based schools

In each state, there is a choice of faith-based schools. The majority of these are Catholic, so teachings and assemblies will reflect this. These schools charge annual fees of about £925, but their standards are well respected, and this price can sometimes be less than for a local school. As with the local schools, admission is usually decided by catchment area.

International schools

Private (international) schools in Australia are of a very high standard. They are an ideal option if you wish for your child to follow an international curriculum; this is often the case for families who relocate for a fixed term.

A number of these schools are single sex, though many of them are co-educational. These schools charge fees averaging around £8,000 per year for younger children, and £13,000 a year for children at GCSE level.

Most of these schools require the child to pass an entrance exam, and almost all of them will ask to see a copy of the child’s passport and previous school reports in addition to a completed application form. Places are competitive, so it is advisable to start applying as soon as you can.
