Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon Role, Colchester

Fantastic opportunity for a Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon to join a supportive, friendly, independent practice in Colchester on a four-day week and 1 in 6 Saturday mornings. Highly competitive package on offer with salaries up to £65,000 (plus annual pay increases and bonuses) and 5 weeks holiday plus bank holidays.

Established well over five decades ago, this proudly independent practice is one of the best in the area. Staff turnover is low, and the practice is looking to be a vet up to further improve day-to-day running and the work/life balance of the team.

Based in Colchester, an historic Essex town, you will benefit from a huge range of things to do. From exploring the rich 2,000-year history of Britain's first city, to picturesque countryside, to the excellent shopping, restaurants, bars and family attractions on offer like Colchester Zoo and Colchester Castle. London, Cambridge, Ipswich, Norwich and the coast are all within easy reach too.

You will be joining an incredibly supportive and friendly 10+ vet team with a wealth of experience behind them. The nursing team is stable, and skilled, and there is a 1:1 ratio of vets to nurse.

There is a real team ethos, with lots of knowledge sharing, support, and case discussions.

The site is purpose built with 5 consult room, a large prep room leading into a double ops theatre, recovery kennels, dental area, imaging suite, exotics ward, separate cat and dog wards. You'll have access to all the modern veterinary toys you would need in a well-equipped general practice including a range of rigid/flexible endoscopes, up to date ultrasound, orthopaedic kit, digital radiography, comprehensive in-house lab.

Key Duties

As the practice has built up a large team, the rota is excellent. You will work a 4-day week with a set day off and just 1 in 6 Saturday morning consults. There may be some inpatient care needed on the weekend, but this is incredibly rare.

Clinical interests are fully supported and encouraged. There is no sole charge as there are always at least three vets on a Saturday.

Ideally you will enjoy the variety of general practice and be happy to get stuck into an exciting and varied caseload. However, there is some scope to accommodate clinical biases.

Package and Benefits

  • Salary is highly competitive for the right candidate, from £40,000 up to £65,000 for experienced certificate holders,
  • Annual pay increases
  • Annual bonus based on success of practice
  • Truly uncapped CPD (anything and everything fully supported)
  • 5 days CPD leave
  • Professional fees paid
  • 5 weeks holiday plus bank holidays
  • 4 weeks sick pay

Key Skills, Qualifications and Client Requirements

The ideal candidate will be a good all-rounder, comfortable with routine general practice responsibilities and procedures. You should be a good team player and have a positive attitude towards building relationships with clients and colleagues.

You must be a Veterinary Surgeon registered with the RCVS and eligible to work in the UK.
