Oman- Educational Options

Educational options for your family in Oman

Expatriates are welcome to attend local Omani schools, but in practice they are unlikely to go as lessons are taught in Arabic and follow an Islamic curriculum.

Instead, most parents consider the private, international schools to be their only realistic option. These schools cater for a variety of nationalities (including Omani, as many wealthy families send their children here), and a considerable number of them follow the British curriculum, with lessons taught in English.

The terms in these schools are the same as those in the UK, so children have a fortnight off at Christmas/New Year, and again at Easter, ahead of a longer summer break.

It’s important to remember that the expat community is large, demand for places is high and spaces are limited. It really is advisable to start applying as soon as you can.

Many schools will require an entrance exam, but the majority will (also) ask for a completed application form with passport photos of the child, and a copy of the child’s birth certificate, along with health records and previous school reports.

The fees for these schools can sometimes be met – or partially funded – by your employer. In any case, most of the international schools require that the fees are paid in full before the start of term. Annual fees can cost around £5,000 per year for younger children, rising to about £11,000 for children taking GCSEs or equivalent.

Alternative options

Some parents choose to home school their children, whether for financial reasons or because they are still waiting for a space to become available.

If neither of these options appeals to you, your other choice is to send your children to a boarding school in your current location. This cost is unlikely to be met by your employer. If you’re prepared to be separated from your children during term times then this could be an option for you, but this is entirely your choice.
