From Sydney to the Outback: A GP's Journey Across Australia
When GPs consider relocating to Australia, one of the most exciting prospects isn’t just the improved earning potential; it’s the lifestyle, the flexibility, and the chance to explore an entire continent while still advancing your career.
In our recent webinar, one of our guest GPs shared a fascinating insight into what life can really look like after making the move to Australia. Unlike the often rigid, location-bound structure of GP careers in the UK, Australia offers something truly unique: the ability to base yourself in one location while travelling the country through your work.

Building a Life in Australia as a GP, With the Freedom to Explore
Our guest GP began his journey in New South Wales, just south of Sydney, the state he knew he wanted to call home. He initially settled into a local practice there and eventually relocated closer to Sydney, before living right in the heart of the city.
But here’s where the story gets exciting.

While Sydney remained his home base, he began travelling across Australia for work, not because he was required to, but because he could. Australia’s healthcare system offers GPs the flexibility to take on placements in various regions, including:
- Western Australia, working in places like Broome, famous for its coastal beauty and breweries
- Exmouth, home to world-renowned reefs where you can swim with turtles and whale sharks
- South Australia, from inland towns like Ceduna to stunning coastal regions
- Queensland, even reaching the northernmost tip of the mainland
These weren’t just scenic excursions, each region offered vastly different patient populations, from metropolitan communities to remote Indigenous health settings. As he explained, the contrast in medicine between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities was eye-opening, both clinically and culturally.
For him, being able to contribute to Indigenous healthcare was a privilege and one of the most rewarding parts of his journey.
And the Best Part? The Logistics Were Taken Care Of.
Unlike what most GPs are used to in the UK, Australian agencies often handle all travel arrangements, flights, cars, and accommodation, meaning you simply turn up at the airport and go.
“It’s incredible. You’ll never get this in the UK.”
