Divisional Director – Veterinary
I have over 12 years of recruitment experience, working my way up from Candidate Resourcer, Recruitment Consultant, Business Manager, to Divisional Director. I manage and run the Veterinary team here at Prospect Health. I thoroughly enjoy finding candidates a rewarding position that meets their expectations and supporting them through the process of registration/compliance (the fun bit), as well as throughout their placement/booking…
Specialist Recruitment Consultant
Hey, I’m Tom – As a Specialist Recruitment Consultant at Prospect Health, I focus on connecting talented Veterinary Surgeons with opportunities across Greater London and the surrounding areas.
With years of experience in internal recruitment within the veterinary industry, I thrive on the variety of clients, candidates, and roles I engage with daily. The ever-evolving nature of the industry keeps things exciting, and I love seeing how different businesses shape their unique approach to veterinary care. My goal is to help professionals find the perfect fit for their career aspirations.
Working with Amy was very straightforward and easy and I never felt like I needed to chase her up on anything.
She was incredibly flexible in working around my available hours and instantly got a great idea of the sort of roles I was looking for.
I found her easy to talk to, and the additional advice she gave on negotiating positions was really helpful – I had felt a little out of practice having been off the job market for a while!
She was awesome at follow-up and from the perspective of an individual looking for a position I can’t fault her at all.
Five stars, would definitely use again (although, as the position she found me is perfect, that likely won’t be for quite some time!).
I am a Veterinary Surgeon working in first opinion practice. Last year I decided to join Prospect Health and have, since then, been working as a locum vet. Chris has helped me through the whole process and was able to find me roles that perfectly matched the conditions I was hoping for. With his help I am now working with a great team and finally found the perfect work/ life balance that I thought not to be possible in the veterinary sector.
After I graduated from University I knew I wanted my first grad vet role to be in England, a friend of mine recommended Chris as a recruiter from Prospect Health as he found her her ideal job in a short space of time. Chris was extremely helpful in my job search, and I found him to be an excellent listener with regards to the type of role I wanted. He gave me objective advice with regards to the job offers I received which I really appreciated as some of the jobs weren’t with Prospect Health. He was always available to answer any of my queries/wish me luck and touch base before interviews. He made the entire process seamless and I am delighted he found me my ideal first job. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a job in the veterinary industry.

Many UK Veterinary Surgeons are choosing to relocate to Australia, attracted by the opportunity for a better work–life balance, excellent career development prospects, and a warmer, more relaxed lifestyle.
Australia’s veterinary sector has a consistent demand for experienced vets across small animal, mixed, and rural practices, making the transition for UK-qualified Veterinary Surgeons both straightforward and rewarding. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to start your veterinary career in Australia.
For many Veterinary Surgeons considering a move to Australia, both professional development and lifestyle are key motivations.
Australia offers not only excellent veterinary career opportunities, but also a uniquely appealing environment shaped by natural beauty, an outdoor-focused culture, and a strong emphasis on work–life balance.
Professional Reward Meets Lifestyle Advantage
Australia’s veterinary sector continues to attract professionals from around the world. With competitive veterinary salaries, supportive practice environments, and clear pathways for career progression and specialisation, the professional benefits are significant. Beyond remuneration, Australia’s diverse landscapes — from vibrant coastal cities to rural and regional communities — provide Veterinarians with a wide range of practice settings to suit their personal interests and clinical goals.
Working as a Veterinary Surgeon in Australia is often characterised by a strong focus on balance and wellbeing. Many practices offer flexible working arrangements, sustainable caseloads, and collaborative teams, allowing vets to focus on delivering high-quality animal care while maintaining time for family, travel, and personal pursuits. This balance is further enhanced by Australia’s outdoor lifestyle, which encourages active, healthy living throughout the year.
Australia is consistently ranked as one of the best countries in the world for quality of life. Several key factors contribute to its strong global reputation:
Excellent Healthcare and Education: Australia’s public services are highly developed, offering residents access to world-class healthcare and education systems (with more details to follow).
Economic Strength and Stability: With a stable, prosperous economy, Australia consistently outperforms many other nations, providing residents with greater financial security and opportunities.
Emphasis on Work-Life Balance: Australia’s work culture values personal time as much as professional success. Fair wages, reasonable working hours, and generous paid leave policies support a more relaxed, enjoyable lifestyle.
World-Class Cities: Australian cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide are known for their outstanding infrastructure, vibrant culture, and high standard of living. Many regularly rank among the world’s most livable cities.
Australia’s diverse range of climates makes it an appealing destination for anyone considering relocation. Spanning multiple climate zones, the country offers everything from tropical warmth to temperate seasons and arid desert landscapes.
In the north, regions like Queensland and the Northern Territory enjoy a tropical climate with warm, sunny weather year-round—perfect for outdoor enthusiasts.
In contrast, southern areas such as Melbourne and Tasmania feature a temperate climate with four distinct seasons, including mild summers and cooler winters. The country’s interior, known as the Outback, is dominated by a dry, arid climate ideal for those who love rugged desert environments. Meanwhile, coastal cities like Sydney and Perth boast a Mediterranean climate, offering hot summers and mild, comfortable winters.
With such a variety of weather conditions, Australia suits a wide range of lifestyles and personal preferences.
The cost of living in Australia can vary significantly depending on the city or region, lifestyle, and personal spending habits. On average, Australia has a relatively high cost of living compared to other countries, especially in major cities like Sydney and Melbourne.
However, the cost of living can vary widely depending on your lifestyle, housing preferences, and city of residence.
The country offers a high standard of living with access to excellent healthcare, education, and services, making the higher costs worthwhile for many residents.
Australia is renowned for its inclusive, multicultural society, making it an inviting destination for migrants:
If you’re looking to relocate to Australia as a Veterinary Surgeon your family will be well looked after. The education system is consistently ranked among the best in the world.
Whether you’re moving with children or seeking further education yourself, Australia has a lot to offer:
Australia offers a well-rounded school education system with both public and private schooling options. Public schools are often free for permanent residents, while private schools offer specialized curriculums for those who can afford tuition fees.
Australia has some of the world’s most prestigious universities, including the University of Melbourne, University of Sydney, Australian National University (ANU), and University of Queensland. These institutions attract students from all over the world, making it an international education hub.
The general practice healthcare sector in Australia is a vital and steadily growing part of the medical landscape, driven by the country’s increasing and aging population, rising prevalence of chronic diseases, and ongoing investment in primary care services. Australians place a high value on accessible, community-based healthcare, which has led to strong demand for qualified General Practitioners (GPs) across both metropolitan and regional areas.
General practice in Australia continues to see consistent growth, supported by government funding, public health initiatives, and a sustained need for preventive and ongoing medical care. GPs serve as the frontline of the healthcare system, managing everything from routine check-ups and immunisations to chronic disease management and mental health care. This sector offers GPs a stable and rewarding career path with excellent opportunities for professional development and long-term security.
General Practitioners (GPs) in Australia can earn competitive salaries, with income influenced by factors such as years of experience, location, billing structure (bulk billing vs. private billing), and the type of practice—whether in private clinics, group practices, or public health settings.
Entry-Level GPs: Newly qualified GPs, including those who have recently completed their fellowship training, typically earn between AUD 120,000 and AUD 160,000 per year. This can vary based on location and whether they are salaried or work on a fee-for-service basis.
Mid-Level GPs: With a few years of post-fellowship experience, GPs often see their earnings rise to around AUD 160,000 to AUD 220,000 annually, especially in mixed or private billing clinics.
Senior GPs: Highly experienced GPs—particularly those in high-demand areas, rural locations, or leadership positions—can earn AUD 220,000 to AUD 300,000 or more per year. Some senior GPs also take on supervisory or teaching roles, adding to their income potential.
GP Careers in Australia vs the UK
Pay Structures, Work Opportunities, and What to Expect
When considering a move overseas as a General Practitioner (GP), one of the biggest questions is how remuneration and employment opportunities differ between countries. Australia and the UK, while both offering rewarding careers, operate under very different systems that can significantly shape a GP’s day-to-day experience and long-term prospects.

Australia offers well-defined and accessible pathways to permanent residency and citizenship for General Practitioners, making it an attractive option for skilled healthcare professionals looking to relocate.
GPs are regularly listed on Australia’s skilled occupation lists, enabling them to apply through the General Skilled Migration (GSM) program. This points-based system considers factors such as age, English language ability, qualifications, and work experience in areas of national need. Given the ongoing demand for primary care doctors, GPs often have a strong chance of receiving an invitation to apply.
Securing PR in Australia allows GPs and their families to enjoy many of the same benefits as citizens, including access to Medicare (Australia’s public healthcare system), public education, and social support services. PR also offers long-term stability and the freedom to live and work anywhere in the country.
After fulfilling the required residency period, PR holders can apply for Australian citizenship. This grants additional benefits such as the right to vote, the ability to obtain an Australian passport, and greater travel flexibility.
I would like to personally thank Prospect Health for everything thus far providing an excellent service in making my move…
