We are recruiting on behalf of an established rural mixed veterinary practice in the Scottish Borders, for a Farm Veterinary Surgeon to join an experienced and supportive team.
This is an excellent opportunity for a vet with a genuine interest in farm animal practice to work with a progressive client base across beef and sheep enterprises, while developing their skills in herd and flock health.
The practice has a strong reputation for providing high-quality clinical care and offers excellent support from experienced colleagues, including several certificate holders and vets currently undertaking further qualifications.
The Role
The role will primarily involve working with progressive suckler beef farms, providing a broad range of routine and preventative services alongside emergency work.
You will have the opportunity to work across a varied farm caseload, including:
An interest in herd and flock health planning is essential, with plenty of scope to develop your clinical and advisory skills within a progressive client base.
The role also includes participation in an equally shared farm-only out-of-hours rota, currently approximately 1 in 6.

The Role

- Pelvimetry
- Artificial insemination
- Bull testing
- Pregnancy scanning
- Blood sampling
- Routine fertility and reproductive work
- Herd health planning
- Emergency farm work
- Pedigree sheep flocks
- Progressive commercial sheep farms
- Flock health planning through an established Flock Health Club
An interest in herd and flock health planning is essential, with plenty of scope to develop your clinical and advisory skills within a progressive client base.
The role also includes participation in an equally shared farm-only out-of-hours rota, currently approximately 1 in 6.
Working Pattern
- Full-time position available
- One weekday off every other week
- Part-time applications considered for the right candidate
- Shared farm-only out-of-hours rota
- Current OOH commitment approximately 1 in 6
- Salary up to £55,000 DOE, pro rata for part-time hours
Practice Facilities
The practice offers a strong range of farm veterinary equipment and resources, including:
- Phase contrast microscopy
- Pulsator-V
- Linear ultrasound scanner
- Curvilinear ultrasound scanners
- Experienced veterinary team with a range of clinical interests
- Several certificate holders within the wider team
- Support available from colleagues undertaking certificate programmes
Key Skills, Qualifications and Requirements
- Veterinary degree and RCVS registration
- Solid initial experience in a farm or mixed veterinary practice
- Confident working independently within a farm animal caseload
- Comfortable participating in a farm-only OOH rota without immediate backup
- Genuine interest in herd and flock health
- Strong interest in preventative medicine and production animal health
- Good communication and client relationship skills
- Able to work collaboratively as part of an experienced and enthusiastic team
- Keen to continue developing clinical and advisory skills
