General Practitioner
J652900 Lower Hutt
Wellington NZD200K
- NZD228K / Year
Are you a UK-trained General Practitioner considering a move to New Zealand? An established, large general practice in Lower Hutt, within the Wellington region, is looking to welcome additional GPs to its supportive, internationally experienced team.
This is an opportunity to join a long-standing practice with a substantial patient community, a strong multidisciplinary team and a structured approach to induction and professional support. The practice is particularly interested in doctors looking for a longer-term move rather than a short trial period.
About the practice
- Established general practice with approximately 50 years of history.
- Purpose-built premises opened around seven years before the recruitment meeting.
- Approximately 26,500 registered patients at the time of the meeting, with capacity and ambition to grow sustainably.
- A wider team of around 75 people, including nurses and administrative colleagues.
- Teaching-practice environment, with registrar placements when available.
- A diverse team with experience supporting doctors from overseas.
- Structured induction, access to multiple supervisors and a weekly Wednesday lunchtime CME meeting.
The role
The practice is seeking GPs for permanent employment, ideally at eight sessions per week (considered full-time within the practice). The practice generally does not encourage more than eight sessions per week, and session templates can be discussed to suit individual working preferences.
- A typical session includes 13 appointments, generally around 15 minutes each, a 15-minute break and 30 minutes of paid paperwork time.
- Session start and finish times are flexible. Many doctors start around 8:00am or 8:30am, with some starting at 7:30am.
- Doctors may choose a regular evening session, usually 5:30pm7:30pm, with eight patients. This forms part of the normal weekly sessions and is not additional paid work.
- All doctors take part in a practice late shift from 5:30pm to 10:00pm, usually around once every five to six weeks.
- Weekend cover is shared across the GP team, normally around two weekend days per quarter. The roster is planned months in advance and shifts may be swapped by arrangement.
- Doctors also contribute to the local regional after-hours provider roster, estimated at around one to one-and-a-half shifts per quarter. These shifts are paid separately.
Salary and benefits
- NZD $228,000 per annum for a Fellow working eight sessions. The final salary and pro-rating for fewer sessions will be confirmed with the employer.
- Five weeks' annual leave.
- NZD $1,750 annual CME allowance.
- Payment by the practice of specified professional registration and related fees, including Medical Council and college fees; exact cover to be confirmed in the offer.
- Additional payment for weekend work where undertaken as extra work and for regional after-hours shifts.
- A supportive approach to discussing training needs and individual circumstances.
Induction and support
The practice places importance on helping doctors settle safely into the practice and New Zealand's primary-care environment. The client described a substantial induction period and said an overseas GP may spend around three weeks in induction before seeing patients. New doctors have access to multiple supervisors, and the weekly CME meeting supports ongoing learning and team connection.
Who would suit this opportunity?
- A qualified GP with relevant experience and eligibility to obtain registration to practise in New Zealand.
- A doctor who is open to relocating to Lower Hutt/Wellington and is realistic about the practicalities of moving internationally.
- Someone seeking a longer-term role and willing to become part of an established team.
- A GP comfortable with a practice that offers extended access, including a regular late shift, shared weekend cover and regional after-hours responsibilities.
- A clinician who values peer support, structured induction and continuing professional development.
