Introduction to finding a graduate veterinary job
With Anna Pill
Anna Pill, Final Year Veterinary student at Liverpool University, shared her job hunting journey with us and all our veterinary student population.
Over a series of blogs and videos she will dispel the myths of finding your first role and give you some top tips to help you make the right decision about your first graduate veterinary job.

Attracting your perfect match:
Alright, fellow final-years , let’s talk about the elephant in the consult room: finding the one (and no, I’m not suggesting to commit more vetcest, I’m talking about your first graduate veterinary job).
I’m in the same boat as you. Final year at Liverpool, EMS survivor and simultaneously desperately searching for my perfect veterinary job match whilst being an #avoidantattachment final boss when it comes to thinking about long-term plans for next year.
But I’ve also been lurking on the other side: two years as a careers coach for the University of Liverpool, 4 weeks at a business internship at Bishopton Vets, and now working freelance for an independent veterinary marketing consultancy Practice Made Purrfect. This means I’ve seen every POV when it comes to veterinary hiring, and I’m here to guide you (and myself) through the pitfalls and make our last year at vet school that one bit easier.
I’ve shared what we’re looking for with employers, but the truth is it takes two to tango. And I’m going to break the news to you that we’re at the stage where “big boy/girl decisions” are no longer a distant future problem. They’re here. Now.
The veterinary graduate job hunt? It’s basically modern dating. Overcrowded. Overhyped. And, worst of all, entirely online. We’ve all secretly hoped for that EMS love story, sparks flying, mentor soulmate, “the vibe.” But let’s be real: that’s more Disney than day-to-day. Most grads are swiping right on jobs they’ve never set foot in, while clinics are speed-dating résumés.

The result? A digital jungle of vague promises, cut-and-paste ads, and zero chemistry. Students hoard tote bags and free pens from careers fairs but leave no closer to finding “the one.” Meanwhile, great clinics get ghosted like an awkward Hinge date.
No wonder everyone’s exhausted, jaded, and desperate for something real.
But before you chuck your laptop out the window and wait for fate to deliver your dream role, here’s the plot twist: demand for vets is booming. Translation? You’re the prize (yes, your mum was right). The trick is knowing how to market yourself without feeling like a walking LinkedIn profile.
And since I’m navigating this mess right alongside you, let’s break down how to actually stand out — and maybe, just maybe, find your perfect match.
