Vet School Diaries – The Vet Graduate Job Search
With Anna Pill
Anna shares her 2nd blog with us about finding out about your “Type” of jobs you want to go for when you graduate.
A great guide for trying to understand what graduate job you would like.

Know your ‘type on paper’ — but don’t box yourself in :
Think of job hunting as dating apps for new grad roles. There are so many profiles out there, and figuring out what you’re actually into (and what gives you the ick) is the best way to avoid wasting time on the wrong match. Knowing your “type on paper” doesn’t just mean declaring yourself a die-hard smallies romantic, that you only have eyes for equine, or that you’re a farm fan forever. After five years of speed-dating every species under the sun, it can feel weird to suddenly pick just one lane. But here’s the twist: your perfect match isn’t just about the caseload, it’s about the vibe.
Think back to your EMS placements, yes, I know, they all start to blur together after about placement number fifteen, but dig deep. Even if you can’t name one dream practice, you definitely recall what clicked. Maybe you thrived in the fresh air and old-school charm of a rural mixed practice, or maybe you got a buzz from the hustle and bustle of a city clinic. Was it the client base that made the day enjoyable, friendly farmers with endless tea and biscuits, or busy professionals rushing in between meetings? Were you happiest being part of a cosy, tight-knit team where everyone knew your coffee order, or did you love the variety of a larger hospital where new faces kept things fresh?
And then there’s the lifestyle side of things, because let’s be honest, it matters. Does the thought of out-of-hours and being on call make your stomach drop faster than a bad first date, or does it give you an adrenaline rush you secretly crave? Would you trade a bit of salary if it means a better rota and more work-life balance?

Beyond the surface stuff, it’s important to think about what kind of relationship dynamic you want with your first job. Do you need structure, mentorship and a clear support system in the form of a grad scheme? Or are you the independent type that thrives when thrown into the deep end from week one?
These details are your red and green flags, the clues that tell you whether a job’s worth a second date, or if it’s time to politely ghost and move on. Make a list of your non-negotiables and your “would-be-nice” traits to help you (and recruiters) figure out what you’re really looking for.
And remember: sometimes, you don’t know your type until you’ve been on a few “dates.” You might surprise yourself with what you love, or what drives you mad. Nothing’s permanent, and every experience (even the awkward ones) helps you get closer to your perfect match.
