Head Veterinary Surgeon

An exciting leadership opportunity has become available for an experienced Head Veterinary Surgeon to join a well-established small animal practice in Barnsley, South Yorkshire.

About the Practice

The practice is a modern, purpose-built small animal clinic, designed to provide a high standard of clinical care in a welcoming and community-focused environment.

The team prides itself on maintaining a friendly, local feel, while delivering excellent veterinary services and building strong relationships within the community through events, education, and client engagement.

The practice is also committed to continuous improvement, regularly investing in both equipment and team development to ensure high clinical standards are consistently achieved.

The Team

You will be leading a supportive and collaborative team including:

  • 2 Veterinary Surgeons (with a new graduate joining)
  • 4 Registered Veterinary Nurses
  • A dedicated and experienced reception team

The current team has a range of clinical interests, including exotics and diagnostic imaging, ensuring a varied and interesting caseload.

There is a strong focus on training and development, with a track record of supporting students and helping them progress into permanent roles.

The Role

As Head Veterinary Surgeon, you will play a key role in both clinical delivery and team leadership.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the clinical team and setting high standards of patient care
  • Driving clinical excellence and continuous improvement
  • Coaching, mentoring, and supporting colleagues at all levels
  • Contributing to the strategic direction of the practice
  • Managing a varied caseload of medical and surgical cases

This role is ideal for a veterinary surgeon who is passionate about leadership, development, and delivering gold-standard, evidence-based care.

Working Pattern

  • 4-day working week
  • 1 in 4 weekends
  • No out-of-hours
  • Participation in on-call support for overnight inpatients if required

This structure provides a strong balance between leadership responsibilities and clinical work, while maintaining a healthy worklife balance.

Candidate Requirements

The ideal candidate will:

  • Hold a BVSc or equivalent veterinary degree recognised in the UK
  • Be RCVS registered (or eligible)
  • Have strong clinical experience in small animal practice
  • Be confident in a leadership or senior role
  • Demonstrate excellent communication, mentoring, and team-building skills
  • Have a passion for clinical excellence and continuous improvement
